Paints & Coatings / Primers / Undercoats / Primers
Cement primers – These are necessary for the plaster whether plain, sand faced , rough cast and asbestos sheets as they are alkaline in nature. If any moisture comes in contact with these substrates due to leakage or any other reason the alkaline surface becomes more active and affects the film if it is not alkali resistant. This primer helps preventing the action of alkali and also helps in reducing the porosity of the surface.
Wood primers – Now a days the normal practice is to use ply wood, particle board for apartments for doors and windows. Common man generally used soft wood like mango, seasum, neem, being cheap. very few use saga or teak due to cost. These ply and other boards get disintegrated in due course of time of the ply separates damaging the structure.
Anticorrosive primers – These primers help in reducing the environmental effects as polluted air, saline atmosphere etc which cause rusting of mild steel or other substrates.
These primers should be applied on cleaned substrate or any rust remaining comes through the paint film in course of time causing degradation of the structure. Bars in concrete get corroded in building and the rust formed has volume six times more than the original area occupied resulting cracks in the structure. Moisture and air is necessary for corrosion hence any leakage or porosity of the surface must be prevented. Unpainted surface is also affected due to moisture and carbon dioxide. CO2 can get converted to carbonic acid affecting the cement structure and life is reduced.
In case of fresh galvanized surface, it is very reactive causing peeling. Similarly the adhesion on aluminium is also poor. In such cases use of macks etch primer helps in improving adhesion of the subsequent coats.
Plastic substrates require treatment depending upon the type of plastic material hence one can approach the company with the type of plastic being used for proper treatment.
